For example, we've surpassed the graphics capabilities, got the flash storage, the tablet PCs, the video conferences. All we don't have is the human-PC interface, that's all.
Admittedly, that's a big part of the whole thing.
* When the AI says "now printing", we assume a wireless connection and a home network, two ridiculous concepts in 1987.
* The idea that everybody would be connected was new.
* The "video phone" in the computer, now is iChat or something similar.
* Searching for an article in a University database from home is an everyday thing.
* the computer reminds me a bit of the first iBook.
We are in 2007 and... where is it?
For sure Apple iPhone IS NOT the KN of today.
So we really already have this, we just lack the refinement and ease of use of this knowledge navigator!
Even the most advanced speech recognition systems aren't sophisticated enough to interpret freestyle speech. Some allow for hesitations & word choice, but most can only follow defined sentence structures.
In addition to this, there is no software yet that can deduce, meaning a program which can take in anything someone says and evaluate what it really means based on things like context, previous knowledge and experience.
The bow-tied assistant is not a computer program, but a real person being trapped and forced to manage the professor's computer.
