Technically yes you do need a license. But you can just make up a callsign and do it anyway. Once you have saved a few lives with your radio skills no one is going to quibble about whether you have a license or not. Also if anyone who actually has a license gets all snooty about it on air and tries to pull you up you can suggest that they simply 'f**k off* and make up a new callsign and put on a funny voice...problem solved.

This aint'fun ! Getting a license ensures that operators have the technical background to know which technology, frequancies to use to fit certain needs. You won't use VHF or UHF to link east-coast to west-coast. Saving lives does not gives you the right to operate on ham frequancies. Off course, no one would mind of you transmitting without a license to request help, but this should stay marginal !

I have bought a yaesu radio and have spoken to some hams. One of them did ask me about my callsign but when I explained that I had just made it up he congratulated me on my initiative. He said 'it's a shame there aren't more hams like you instead of these boring old duffers' I feel very proud to be a ham and I am bursting to save a few lives. I did tune my radio to the local police channel but they weren't so keen to talk to me except they wanted my address..after free tea/biscuits i expect.
What is it with ...( 4 weeks ago by Lahirien)
What is it with these comments? It is Federal and international law that you must be licensed to use Ham frequencies. Regardless of how many "lives you save," the FCC WILL hunt you down and can fine you up to $10,000 for repeat offenses. Forgive us for making sure that the law is followed.

Kudos to hams when we help. All political differences aside (you know me as a radical leftie). But when it comes to help, ham radio comes through. DIT DIT

Get a license/license utterfanny. This is NOT libertarian land. We have TOO MANY pirates on the bands now, and a lot are crooks. Do not be one.

I don't have a licence either. Most hams are OK with this. One guy threatened to report me but when he found out that I have a very expensive radio he didn't because then I would have wasted my money.

ratsausge if I were to find you , you would be reported, I don't care how much money you have wasted on radio. I worked hard for my license and I don't need people like you to messing it up for every true ham out there. All the license hams out there will be laughing when you and others like you are picked up by the FCC. And the FCC will find you.

I'm afraid you typify all that is wrong with ham radio. You should be welcoming new blood to the hobby, not nit-picking over whether someone has passed a silly test or not. Remember it's a free country. Try to have a little charity in your heart this Christmas. I will pray for you.

Just stumbled over this discussion. I run an organisation dedicated to opening the airwaves for all regardless of technical ability. Some of our members (and we have in excess of 157,000 worldwide) hold licences but most don't.Normally we find the FCC don't prosecute as long as you have a good radio with lots of knobs on it and don't say naughty things on air.
