Over 50 years ago I stood (and sat) on line all night in front of the Loew's Sheridan theatre in Greenwich Village so that I could buy tickets to see and hear Billie Holiday. I sat in the 10th row and was mesmerized by her personality and her performance. The theatre shook from the applause at the end of the show.

I didn't see the film with Diana Ross. Anyhow, Ross wouldn't have been responsible for the script, and the movie was made to entertain and earn money. This is the real thing: a stunning video, it shows two sides of BH's singing (she did have a sense of humor) and she was tops.

I am an 80's baby and I love this song (God Bless the Child) and everything that it stands for. Thank you for taking me back to the days when my mama sang this song to me while watching "Lady Sings the Blues". I believe that I am the person that I am today because of the great music that I was exposed to at a young age.

In my opinion, this is the best version of this beautiful jazz standard. As a 12 year old, I deeply appreciate jazz music.
Just looks at lady. Her arms bent, her fingers snapping to the beat, her eyebrow cocked up, in that lovely satin dress. Simply beautiful.

I wish that there was more film footage of "Lady Day". Back in the day, that was Billie Holiday's nickname. They called her simply..."Lady Day." She of course had more live performances, but unfortunately, her poor health, (due to substance abuse) and legal problems would begin to interfere with Lady Days' career and her life would take a downward and tragic spiral that lead to her untimely death, but thank goodness we do have some film footage of her performing.
