becuase of the spin involve in each shot by the different opponents !
Table tennis is not just hitting the ball back, no there is lots more going on that u the spectator may not see
, its hard bro n a highly skilled game , more than most ppl would even know !
I play it n used to play it competitively , it's like some1 puts under spin on a ball if u don't return it properly u will hit the ball in the net due to the spin u receive from the opponent !

Top spin if u don't return it properly will force u to hit the ball off the table or hit it high! so it may look like they were hitting it directly 2 each other but it takes more to change that momentum , do some research on the 2 players in that match , especially waldner , he is known as the michael jordan of modern Table tennis , very respected in the asian table tennis world , n like the most decorated western player to boot ! hope that helps ..

This is indeed n exhibition match , I totally agree , look at the 1st serve ..... Persson serves Waldner immediately backs up, which in professional play is a no no so early in the ball play! He purposely makes himself vunerable !
Please note that even if the ball was returned high via a lob it still contains some unpredictable spin that's very hard to return without the opponent possessing extreme control also skill , both of them are awesome !

Respect, its like if you play at shot at the edge of the table you should say sorry, plus when a ball is that high its hard to just drop it over the net, like really hard and they end up getting back in time because it bounces high

That doesn't sound right. The players are trying to win. The goal is to make it so that it is hard for the other player to hit it back. So hitting the ball towards the other player seems more like poor strategy than respect.
I agree that it would have been difficult to get the ball to drop just over the net, but I don't see why he didn't just aim at a different part of the table or something, so that the other guy would have to move around a bit more.

@ people wondering why Persson didn't just hit it short, aka drop shot, or aim the ball at both sides of the table, to make Waldner move more... the answer is because of spin.
It is incredibly difficult to hit a shot that has been lobbed with so much sidespin. It's a much technically safer shot to just smash it directly back at your opponent. The "defensive" player controls a rally through spin, while the "offensive" player controls a rally through tempo. It's not respect, it's smart offense.
