This video starts with a visual montage of the sheer number of air conditioners used on our street in Cairo, Egypt, describing them as energy parasites that actually increase the heat of the surrounding air. It then shows the vacuum tube heat pipe solar absorption cooling air conditioning system installed by solar engineer Les Hamasaki at the Debs Park Audubon Environmental Center in Los Angeles. Les Hamasaki describes the 10-ton solar chiller and we conclude with a note about how solar chillers not only eliminate the need for air conditioners, but the need for entire power plants. They also produce hot water and can be used for sterilizing and desalinating contaminated water. As we say in the video, solar air conditioners "USE THE SUN'S LIGHT TO DEFEAT THE SUN'S HEAT!" Thus, the hotter it gets outside, the cooler it gets inside!

Calling it "solar powered" is misleading. The hot water reservoir is typically heated by burning natural gas. It would be possible to heat the water using solar energy, but it adds complexity that isn't shown in the video.

In this case, they actually are heating the water using solar energy (that's where the vacuum tubes come in). They focused more on the chiller, which isn't the solar component. The same kind of chiller is commonly used with water that has been heated with natural gas.

Right you are idius -- and we do focus on the solar and it is shown, when Les holds the vacuum tube collector in his hand (otherwise we would have had to go up on the roof which was not permitted). In Germany my wife and I have exactly the same kind of heat pipe evacuated tube collector (50 tubes) for our hot water system -- in the summer we have gotten up to 104 Celsius (4 degrees higher than boiling). It is a no brainer. What is interested are the chillers that use solar heat.

When an individual does make a technology-mistake, it does most of its harm to, that individual. That higher technology, will require highly trained specialist. Anytime one person does decide for many people, that one person can bring distruction to many people. After that technology does become proven, the item will become more cost-effective than, the older-high-technology.

solar or any other power does create new jobs. have a company and a factory and start making solar panels. even if you import them, you still need workers to install the panels on the roof. and then you need maintenance too.
coal might create jobs, yet it still kills miners everyday. worldwide around 20 miners die each day. I prefer if miners climb on roofs. when methane pockets explode and when the mine caves in, there isnt much chance. at least you can survive the fall from the roof.

air condition is ridiculous. why not building houses with bricks and paint them in bright colours? humans did this for thousands of years to keep their homes cold. and then they thought about using solar chimneys and wind towers. it worked and it still works. a wooden house in a hot climate isnt a good idea. thats why ancient greeks, arabians, egyptians and africans already built brick or mud houses.
