Why don't you shove it? I don't always mention homophobia. And maybe you're homophobic you little prick.
BTW, "pro-gay/homophobic beliefs" is an oxymoron, you moron.
What I love about ... ( 7 months ago by LWOPP)
What I love about Curry and so many other skaters from that era is that they took. their. time. with all the elements. What's the rush these days? Although they may seem like dinosaurs to younger people now, Curry had those gorgeous running edges and Robin Cousins had his delayed single axel. Those and other "old fashioned" elements were things of beauty, and the skaters gave you time to appreciate them before going on to the next move. I miss that kind of skating!

Man. That opening single Axel was gorgeous. That was ballet right there.

This guy is ... ( 5 months ago by like1976)
This guy is absolutely wonderful. He had briliant hand and feet positions. His performances were emotional and he pulled everyone in with him. If you can leave a mark that causes people to yearn for yesterday, then you are a legend. I really don't even watch skating anymore because it is so boring and standard (who can jump the highest). Thank goodness I was around to see this on television. There will never be another one like him because he possessed a natural artistic ability. Thanks, John.

that was a big moment in skating history when he made it not only a great sport but a wonderful sport. I wonder if he knew he would change history that night?
You are correct in ... ( 3 months ago by pellebravesskylar)
You are correct in all of your statements. I love the fact that he lands almost every jump on the beat of the music and how carefully nuanced each movement is without seeming to be forced or pretentious. He actually choreographed all of his routines - mind-boggling by today's standards. IMHO, John Curry is the greatest skater EVER.

That performance has to be the Best I have ever seen. No one really comes close to that really. Did Not put a foot wrong. Fantastic.

Good landings...But ... ( 2 months ago by qwertrog)
Good landings...But judging from where we are now, too much "empty" circles between jumps. And wild enthusiasm about his choreography seems so far exaggerated- an arm over head ISN'T choreography...
Then please ... ( 1 month ago by floskate)
Then please enlighten us as to what does constitute choreography! Do you think wild arm flailing is an improvement on this??
Oh and I'm sure the likes of Petipa, Balanchine, Ashton, Macmillan et al, would take issue with your definition of what ISN'T choreography!!
We're not ... ( 1 month ago by qwertrog)
We're not discussing Petipa, Balanchine, Ashton or Macmillan, are we? Speaking in terms of FS choreography,IMHO, Toller Cranston showed about the same time what can be done on ice besides just repeating the same jesture once and again through the entire programme. "Do you think wild arm flailing is an improvement on this?? " No, I don't. Nor can I guess what made you think I do:))
Putting Curry's ... ( 1 month ago by zevno)
Putting Curry's style in historical perspective, Hoffman, one of Curry's rivals, skated like a robot, as did many other male skaters of the time. Curry would have preferred to have been a ballet dancer, had his parents supported it. Curry and Cranston caused an artistic revolution in Men's skating. In 1976, I thought Curry's adaptation of classical ballet to skating was overly formal, but you know what, today it looks great to me. The camera work on this is like you are skating with him.
It is bizarre to ... ( 1 month ago by zevno)
It is bizarre to contemplate, that while in the dance arts in the 60's and 70's, movement wasn't particularly "restricted" for males. Whatever a choreographer wanted to try was fine. In skating, it was restricted. Skating got caught up in what constituted being manly -- perhaps as a backlash to gay lib -- but with their technical excellence, Curry and Cranston shattered that garbage, and liberated artistry in men's skating.
Another vintage ... ( 1 month ago by zevno)
Another vintage performance that is a joy to behold is Janet Lynn's 1973 Nationals, on youtube. Unfortunately, the audio quality of it isn't particular great, but still.
One singular quality of Curry's was the ease with which he performed these moves. For me though, Ilya Kulik surpassed Curry, years later, in breathtaking skating, both technically, and also being liberated from the confines and mannerisms of classical ballet.
