Preston Reed - Tribes

Poslao: katanamanatee
Opis:
This is a performance by Preston Reed of his piece "Tribes", taken from the dvd "The Guitar of Preston Reed: Expanding the Realm of Acoustic Playing".
Apologies for the red text, I don't have any registered software for uploading from dvd. If you like this tune I suggest you check the dvd, it teaches you to play this piece and two others in great detail.
Also the video is a tiny bit out of sync with the audio but I can't seem to sort that, I've uploaded it three times now and the problem doesn't go away and the video I put up is fine pre-upload.

Tagovi: acoustic andy don erik guitar harmonics mckee mongrain percussion preston reed ross solo style tap tapping

But it should be ... ( 9 months ago by gavialisarmadilhas)
But it should be regarded, instead, as an extra technique that was invented and further incorporated in guitar player's repertoire. The exact same way as x-ray technology is nowadays incorporated in medical techniques. Drifting is not Preston Reed's intellectual propriety!

I've read the Andy Mckee was influenced by Preston. They are definitely different though. I like them both.

He[andy mckee] was INFLUENCED by Preston Reed, so obviously the feel of Drifting was based off this song! He is not copying.. wtf

virtuosic is what it is folks, so why quibble?, all i can hear in this lineage (thematically and pyrotechnically) is michael hedges, who's smiling in heaven...

and i do think this real wood sounds way better than the plastic ovation he uses elsewhere, though not as easy to play...
I think his tone ... ( 8 months ago by katanamanatee)
I think his tone has improved since he started using his graphite Adamas but not when he is doing a recording using just his pickups, then it sounds pretty harsh.
I saw him live last year in a very intimate setting, only about fifty people in a bar but his live tone was incredible, very well defined and powerful and very different from the live videos of him on youtube.

RulesRedefined - What you're saying is true to some extent, but the fact is every guitarist using hammerons and pullofs IS ripping someone else off... and that's usually good!
Learning from your influences is part of being a musician, and it's how music evolves. A lot of laymen don't understand that, unfortunately.
Also putting a similar technique riff into one of your own compositions as a musician is usually intentional and meant to be a compliment to that influence. :)

there's some diff between being influenced and ripping..that's what i'm trying to say... Drifting is influenced by tribes but it isn't a rip off of tribes

Only in exposure and catchiness. Check out tunes like Rainmaker for sheer madness, Blasting cap for a speedy and fun tune, or Tractor Pull.
At least where it comes to playing bonkers guitar Preston is a master, he plays in a more groove orientated than melodic way a lot of the time but he is still amazing.

What make/model of guitar is he playing? This is just amzing stuff. Love it.
Array ( 5 months ago by katanamanatee)
Hey man,
He is using a Washburn of some kind and has fitted it with a Seymour Duncan SA1 and an SA2 pickup as well.

Thanks for the info... kind of looks like an EA20SDL now that you mention it. I like the sound of it better than his Adamas here on you tube. I'd be curious to hear both live to compare.

His direct tone with this setup definately sounds better than the Adamas when you only hear the pickups but when you see Preston live in an intimate setting his Adamas sounds fantastic. I saw him live in November last year and his sound was fantastic, really surprised me.

why does everyone have to say how much they prefer x over y? andy and preston are two fucking different people with two different views on music. I bet preston and andy are good friends. Talent attracts talent.
