If something were to happen to the shuttle in orbit the only issue with landing is if it can make it back into the atmosphere ok. (all of the attention being paid to the tiles on it's belly) There are several landing sites around the world, but if it was still in orbit it wouldn't have any problem making it back to either California or Florida.
